Organizations: a Multilevel Perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
The objective of this paper is to contribute to a deeper understanding of system usage in organizations by examining its multilevel nature. Past research on system usage has suffered from a levels bias, with researchers studying system usage at single levels of analysis only (e.g., the individual, group, or organizational level). Although single-level research can be useful, we suggest that studying organizations one level at a time will ultimately lead to an unnatural, incomplete, and very disjointed view of how information systems are used in Deborah Compeau was the accepting senior editor for this paper. Natalia Levina, Teresa Marcon, and Neil Ramiller served as reviewers. The associate editor chose to remain anonymous. practice. To redress this situation, we draw on recent advances in multilevel theory to present system usage as a multilevel construct and provide an illustration for what it takes for researchers to study it as such. The multilevel perspective advanced in this article offers rich opportunities for theoretical and empirical insights and suggests a new foundation for in-depth research on the nature of system usage, its emergence and change, and its antecedents and consequences.

A multilevel perspective on faultlines: Differentiating the effects between group- and organizational-level faultlines.
Integrating the literature on faultlines, conflict, and pay, we drew on the basic principles of multilevel theory and differentiated between group- and organizational-level faultlines to introduce a novel multilevel perspective on faultlines. Using multisource, multilevel data on 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, we found that group-level faultlines were negatively associated with group per...

متن کاملMultilevel processes and cultural adaptation: Examples from past and present small-scale societies.
Cultural adaptation has become central in the context of accelerated global change with authors increasingly acknowledging the importance of understanding multilevel processes that operate as adaptation takes place. We explore the importance of multilevel processes in explaining cultural adaptation by describing how processes leading to cultural (mis)adaptation are linked through a complex nest...

We contribute to this growing 4. body of literature by exploring how cultural (mal)adaptive dynamics relate to multilevel 5. social-ecological processes occurring at different scales, where the lower levels combine into ne...
متن کاملMultilevel Models to Examine Multilevel Networks in Networked Organizations” for consideration for publication in the special issue of Social Networks on multilevel social
As the network structures of work and community have grown more complex, multilevel networks have emerged as the main structural feature in organizational settings. Stressing the importance of the affiliation ties of the meso-level network, we propose a conceptualization of multilevel networks within networked organizations. To examine such networks, researchers have used both hierarchical line...
